How to Replace a Kia Sportage Replacement Key

The key on many Kia models comes with an electronic keyless entry system built into. The key functions like the remote control and is exchangeable by a Kia dealer.

Key fobs can fail to function due to a variety of reasons, including batteries that are dead, worn-out buttons signal interference or water damage. Here are some helpful tips to help you get your Kia sportage replacement key working again.

How do you replace a remote key or a smartkey?

No matter if your Kia is equipped with an intelligent key, remote key push to start key, or regular metal non-transponder key, the battery in these keys will eventually need replacement. This is particularly when your car displays a message indicating that the remote or smart keys have low battery power.

Luckily, it's an easy procedure. To replace the keyfob battery remove your mechanical key from the slit at the back of the fob. Then, you need to pry the cover open. Inside the key fob, there will be the small screw that holds the battery in its place. Using a small screwdriver, take the screw off and pull out the old battery. Then, insert the new and close the slit inside the key fob.

When the key fob is equipped with an updated battery and you've tested it, press the lock and unlock buttons. It's good in case the doors lock and unlock as expected. You can now use the hands-free feature to lock and unlock your Kia when your fingers get cold or when you need to go on errands around Brandon.

Note: Certain key fobs (transponder chip or smart keys) may need to have their programming done. This requires a computer, which is only available to the locksmith who works for the automotive dealer. Other keys (non transponder keys made of metal) do not require programming. To replace the key fob's battery, take off the cover from the back and use a plastic bar tool to remove the latch that holds the black negative battery cable. Remove the old battery, and then align the replacement battery so that its "+" side faces you, and the "-", negative side is facing the fob's electrical contacts. Avoid using too much force when pushing the new CR2032 into position to avoid damaging or breaking the metal contacts.

Once the new battery is installed, turn the key fob off and then on in the ignition several times until the door locks cycle. You can then test your Kia's keys fob once more to ensure it's functioning properly.

How can you replace the smart key

Depending on the model of your Kia Sportage, you may have an ordinary key fob or a smart key. The smart key comes with an embedded mechanical key blade however, the standard key fob does not. Both kinds of key fobs contain a battery inside them that will eventually have to be replaced. Fortunately, it's an easy task that only takes about two minutes.

Make sure to shut off your Kia and be on a flat, well-lit surface before you begin. Be aware that there are tiny pieces inside the fob which could fall out if you are not careful.

The first step is to find the small release button that is located on the lower backside of your fob. This will be either a circular button or a rectangular slot. You can open the key fob by pressing the button.

Once the key fob is opened, remove the battery that was in it. The new battery should be a CR-2032 and can be purchased online or at a local auto parts store. After you're done, your key fob will allow you to lock and unlock your vehicle, even if it isn't running.
